Henderson Franklin Attorneys O’Brien and Richmond Speak on Professionalism in Family Law
Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A., is proud to announce that Christina (“Christy”) O’Brien, chair of the firm’s Divorce, Marital, and Family Law Department, and Kayla Richmond, a Florida Bar Board Certified Marital and Family Law attorney, were honored to present at the December 6, 2024, luncheon of the Association of Family Law Professionals (AFLP). Their presentation, “Raising the Bar,” focused on fostering professionalism and civility in family law, addressing challenges such as discovery disputes, communication with opposing counsel, and peacemaking strategies.
Both attorneys highlighted the delicate balance family law practitioners face when advocating for their clients while ensuring the well-being of children, maintaining civility, and advancing cases efficiently. Their insights provided practical solutions and emphasized the importance of adhering to the Bounds of Advocacy guidelines and local rules.
With over two decades of experience, O’Brien has built a reputation for handling complex family law matters, including high-net-worth divorces, timesharing disputes, and prenuptial agreements. She is a dedicated advocate for her clients, balancing compassion with strategic counsel. O’Brien is also a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Mediator and an appointed Guardian Ad Litem in Lee County certified to make recommendations regarding parenting plans that would be in the child’s best interest.
O’Brien has been recognized locally by Naples Illustrated magazine as a “Top Lawyer” for her work in Family Law (2020-2024) and on a national scale, Best Lawyers in America® has also recognized her for her work in Family Law (2024-2025). Richmond is a Florida Bar Board Certified Marital and Family Law attorney. She is recognized for her expertise in handling sensitive family law matters such as child custody, alimony, and domestic violence cases. Her approach combines technical legal proficiency with understanding her clients’ emotional complexities. Richmond is deeply involved in the Southwest Florida community, serving on the Board of Directors for the Harry Chapin Food Bank and volunteering as a coach with the Fort Myers High School Track & Field Team. In the legal field, she is also active in local bar associations and professional organizations, contributing to initiatives promoting health and wellness and advancing the family law practice.
Throughout her career, Richmond has received much recognition on the local, state and national level, including being named a “Rising Star” by Florida Super Lawyers® magazine (2016-2023), a “Top Lawyer” by Naples Illustrated magazine (2019, 2021-2024), and named one of “Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America” for her work in family law in years 2021-2025.
